Stress, sweat, muscles, a cat, ladders, power tools and more…

I’m in my new house! The last few days have been a whirlwind, but I’ll try to catch you up.

Part I: It’s Money for a Key

I almost didn’t get the key on time. Even though I signed my life away at 10:30am. Apparently, the bank of scotchneat took their damn sweet time getting the money wired over to a branch, causing someone from my lawyer’s office to have to run there and get it to the seller’s lawyer with about 3 minutes to spare. I was NOT pleased at the prospect of having to cancel everything and wait until Monday to get the big move done, especially since I had people driving for over 2 hours just to help me move some furniture.

Day three without the Interweb at home. I was too traumatized to write about it earlier, and it concerns my good friends at Rogers. Short story short is that I finally took in my old modem to get the upgrade done, and I had already told them I was moving.

Rogers Girl: Are you getting your new modem when you move?

S: No. I’m trading it in for the new one now.

Rogers Girl: Okay. AND THEN SHE PROCEEDS TO CANCEL MY ACCOUNT.

My account is in limbo, and apparently there is no way to pull my Interweb connection out of limbo without someone coming to my (old) house to reconnect it. What. Ever.

I called the business office on Monday and got the most emo Support person I’ve ever talked to, who pretty much admitted that Rogers girl didn’t know what she was doing, but that the result was as it is: no Interweb for a week. Woe is me in my privileged Western life but I want my blessed Interweb! The rebates and discounts won’t keep my fingers typing and my feeds burnin’, people.

All this is to say that I may not be that communicative in the next two weeks while I deal with my tribulations and move and such.

Every time I have taken Meyers-Briggs or something like it, I come up as INTJ, so at least I’m consistent :) The only part I disagree with is the “certainty”, because I am considerably more tickled by uncertainty, at least in art and science.

You can call me Master for short.

INTJ – “Mastermind”. Introverted intellectual with a preference for finding certainty. A builder of systems and the applier of theoretical models. 2.1% of total population.

Money

It ain’t everything, but it’s a lot. I was shredding old documents tonight and came across financial stuff from the late 90′s, when I had just gone back to school to get another M.A. I have all of these bankbooks where the bank balance teeters on overdraft, and there are painstaking notes beside each withdrawal. I was immediately back to the apartment I had then, and the feeling that never went away of counting pennies. Wanting so badly to buy some new shoes, just for something fun, and not being able to.

Each note was a worry back then. Each tick in the bankbook was me double-checking that it was in fact something I paid for, and not, by some miracle, a bank error that would let me get enough groceries that week.

So tonight I celebrate that I have enough money to buy groceries.

Went to Merchant of Venice at Stratford last night. Warning: spoilage.

This is always an interesting play for me to see, since I know it so well: studied in high school, in university, and taught it at high school as well.

Dear Rogers,

I’m not enthused about this campaign to get my modem upgraded. You’ve been persistent. I’ll give you that. Kudos for saving the shiny impressive paper for the third letter (since you’ll save money on the premise that most people will have already traded in their old modem by then). The draw for a $1k gift certificate was good too.

Here’s the thing. I finally got around to trying to trade in my modem. The letter said there’s a website where I can check to see where one is available. I found my account number and got that entered, and you told me that I already have a new modem, and therefore you won’t show me where the new ones are available…

If I was good enough to get a new modem, and let’s just say for shits and giggles that I already got my new modem, why should the location of the modems now be a state secret??

Next step, I took the modem to my local Rogers, where I got to watch the girl on duty talk to her friend for a good 5 minutes without asking me what I needed. In fact, I had to walk to the other side of the counter to interrupt their conversation. Only to be told that the two places where I might get a modem are not this one, and both are open only until 6pm, and this was at 5:55.

Chances of me being happy about having to lug it out again and possibly not get one because you won’t tell me where they are? Not good.

Shopping, boxen and good pirates

I worked at home on Friday, thinking that I’d have time to get through some of the phone calls & address changes I have to make. However, best laid plans… Even when I’m at home, the concalls keep coming, and then I had to take JL back to the vet. As soon as he saw the carrier, he made a beeline for the shoe cubby upstairs. As I ran up behind him, all I could see were the tocks disappearing behind the curtain :) Nevertheless, we got there and his weight is up (good) but he still has digestion problems (bad) and some weird nodules on his ears, which may be allergies. Of course I would get a cat with allergies… We made it out unscathed, though and I have to up his insulin a bit, so we’ll see how it goes. After that, it was a book and some scotch for me.

Saturday, I ordered my cork flooring for the new kitchen! Hard to describe. I decide the natural colour was gonna clash with the hardwood – just far enough off the colour to be distracting, so I chose this cool colour that is called Amazon, that is mostly brown but with green-grey depending on how you look at it. Something like this (but you can’t see the highlights):

Anyway, I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to see what it looks like once it’s down. I also found a set of drawers for the bathroom, since there isn’t much in the way of storage (i.e. no vanity) in it currently. Then I went over to the LCBO to steal more boxen.

Came back and did some more packing. I uncovered a box in the basement that held the sum total of my teaching materials from, oh, 9 years ago. I was a very good teacher, I must say. The number of teaching aids and materials was pretty awesome, never mind the fact that my test questions look to have been done on a … typewriter. Although I think I was using my computer, it’s just that we hadn’t progressed too far in the wide world of fonts by then. The box had been on the floor since I moved here, so about 7 years. In that time, an entire ecosystem had developed on its underside – can mold produced its own dirt? It looks more like worm castings than anything else. Whatever, I had to do the icky dance and then I dispensed of the box outside. I’ve bundled up all of the papers for recycling as well, signifying the final final end to my life as an English teacher, I suppose. There’s just no way I’m moving a box of stuff that I haven’t opened in 7 years :)

Saturday night, I took out friend B for his birthday dinner, and enjoyed some chicken and shrimp and wine. But due to the teacher box, I had taken an allergy pill earlier and so I entered a dopey phase soon after that. He’s a good pirate. Still managed to get the painting done in the living room to cover up the picture holes I plastered last week.

Took me 3.5 HOURS on Sunday to clean up my work Inbox. Thank goodness there was cheesy tv programming to divert me. Then I did the usual workout, and some more packing and ran some errands and some more packing. And then Melle, who is also a good pirate, dropped by with even more boxen that she had pilfered at LCBOs other than the one that I keep hitting. My plan to hide the total number I’ve taken is working nicely, though both of us may have pictures displayed in the staff rooms by now (known box hog).

Got some more work work done, and sorted out some of the sideboard papers. Every time I pitch stuff, I feel lighter (and my family will thank me as well, since there’s less to move).

Not an exciting weekend, but a productive one?
