Taps

As you all know, Dollhouse will be no more. There is gnashing of teeth, but unfortunately this time is bowing to the inevitable.

While the last few eps have been pretty good–especially the last one where we go to see Sierra’s back story–on the whole, it has never been of the calibre of the rest of the Joss oevre.  What really gets my goat is that it had a longer run than Firefly, and that makes no sense. And then I get all ragey again and want to box Fox executives about the ears.

I’m looking forward to the back half of the season. Joss says that we have some  good storytelling still to come.

Truth be told, the biggest problem with Dollhouse was its star. Dushku was never up for the challenge, and her star vehicle really served to expose her shortcomings as a versatile actress.

What am I grateful to this show for? How about the awesome talents and dance moves of Enver Gjokaj and the sweet versatility of Dichen Lachman, who showed up Dushku in every scene that they were in together. I guess the best news out of all this is that now we have two new additions to the Joss players.

I’ll be watching all of the double eps in December, and will hoist a final scotch when it all ends. Go big, Joss, go big.

I too am annoyed with Fox. I think they screwed up the marketing of the show before it aired, and I think they screwed up again when they didn’t re-air the first season over the summer.

But the people I’m most annoyed with is Joss and the rest of the show’s producers. The same way I’m really annoyed with the producers of Defying Gravity. As far as I’m concerned Defying Gravity and Dollhouse should have been sold to a cable channel like SyFy instead of one of the big networks. The chances were slim that either show was going to be able to pull in the kind of numbers that major networks like to see. Dollhouse averaged approx. 3 million viewers per episode, which is pretty sad for a major network (Numb3rs which also airs on Friday night pulls in around 10 million), but 3 million would be very respectable numbers for a cable show (that’s roughly what BSG averaged). If the shows had been sold to cable, they likely would have enjoyed success and been renewed. But the producers decided to go with a major network, more than likely because the majors pay a lot more money than cable does, and while the producers may have made more money, the fans are getting left out in the cold.

I think in this case though, because it was tied to Dushku’s “producer” contract with Fox, Joss didn’t really have a choice.

But if he ever goes with a prime network again, then we should have the right to put a sack over his head and swear at him in Chinese :)
