When measurement and bullsh*t come together

Joel says Quit it. Stop it. And I agree.

Measurement is a good thing, when you keep your eye on the ball and have things to measure. Trying to measure “performance metrics” that have only internal referents or circular “benchmarks” is an exercise in budget inflation, process enlargement and frustration enhancement.

And when in doubt, go to the customer. Does it work for them? Will they buy it? Will they love it? You’re good.
